Additional New York tidbits

posted Sunday, 24 December 2006

  • When I got home from New York, I had to take a cab back because I took a late train.  At Union Station, the cab line is kinda fucked-up.  Because there aren't many cabs in DC (particularly on Sundays after midnight), they have each person at the front of the line tell the cabbie where they are going...then they call out for anyone else going to the same neighborhood to join the ride.   Everyone pays what they should pay, but as you can imagine some cheating goes on.  For instance, this one pea-brained girl  said she was going to Adams Morgan (my area).  When she got in the cab, she supposedly "forgot that she had to go to her office" on K St.  At first I just thought she was an idiot, but the other passengers (and cabbie) weren't fooled -- as soon as she left, they all said the girl knew where she was going before she got in, and lied to jump the line.  One of them heard her say to a friend on her cellphone that she had to work all night...while she stood in line waiting for a cab.  Bonus: she asked our cab driver, who was almost certainly of a non-Christian persuasion, what he was doing for Christmas.  Smooth.

  • Despite its lofty reputation, New York has mostly the same stores that everyone else does at this point.  But there's an important caveat: the New York versions of these stores tend to be bigger, with a wider selection and many more sizes in stock.  For instance, there is a new Filene's Basement in Union Square.  It's FUCKING HUGE - THREE FLOORS of stuff, one dedicated entirely to housewares, linens and shoes.  It had a lot of the same stuff as the Filene's stores in my area, but there was more of everything - especially stuf fin my size.  They even had 3.4 ounce bottles of Kenneth Cole Black cologne.  It's still cheaper online, but it was the first time I'd ever seen that size in any store besides a perfume-only vendor.  At the Express where I got my jeans, I actually found my size with the help of some employees.  I almost never find my jeans size here in DC.

  • Dinosaur in Harlem is my new favorite BBQ place.  But I still don't mind Brother Jimmy's.

  • Noah and Maya were fantastic hosts.  I can't say that enough.

  • Did I mention that a loft party I went to with Dave, Karen, Diddy and Chris was broken up by the cops?  It had been ages since that happened at a party I was at.  It felt like college all over again.
