As you may well be aware, The Black Eyed Peas may be the only band that I consider to deserve the 'sellout' tag. It was just too blatant: underground, respectable hip-hop act with live band drops two above-decent, respectable albums that mix pop fun with occasional seriousness. Then what happens?
The black woman band member leaves; a hot white woman takes her place; the new chick becomes just as highlighted as the rest of the band, a status the black female singer never enjoyed; they cut an album completely devoid of any hint of gravity; their popularity shoots through the roof; you try to keep their success in perspective...until they release an even more soulless album with a knifing single that kills the last shred of dignity you held out for them in your mind; they produce the white chick's (even worse) solo album; you have to listen to their old albums just to remember what they sounded like in the first place.
In the case of the Peas, that unforgivable single was "My Humps". Even for a pop song written and produced by a bunch of ex-dancers, My Humps dropped BEP lower than I ever imagined they could sink. And this is coming from someone who hated "Where Is The Love", "Let's Get Retarded" and "Shut Up".
Then out of nowhere, Alanis Morrisette (who I'm sure many of us had forgotten about)
records a spoof cover and video for My Humps. How does shit like this happen? I will say this: Alanis' version is funnier simply because it's clear she knows just how stupid the whole thing is.
