Apple fails me again.

posted Wednesday, 30 May 2007
Guess which gadget I rely upon almost daily decided to crap out on me again?  If you guessed my iPod, you win!

Seriously, this is getting absurd.  This isn't the first time I've written about this.  This is the second iPod I have; the first was replaced under warranty 3 days short of a year.  This second one has crapped out twice before.  The first time, a software update at home resurrected it.  The last time, a trip to the store somehow jumpstarted it.

This time, I told them about my frustrations with the model in general.  They told me that the generation of photo iPod I have is in fact less reliable than other models.  She said that the thinner, newer ones had fewer moving parts, and thus was less prone to damage by jostling.  Whatever.  I don't run with my iPod.  Other than occasional drops while in its sheath, my iPod lives in the lap of luxuy for the most part.   I'm just stunned that I've had two iPods, and neither of them have lasted a year.  At the core, it's a hard drive - and hardware should never fail that quickly in my opinion.  Now I have to commute and work without my pacifier/jumpstarter.

They ordered me a new one, and it is supposed to come in within 1-3 days.  Thank god this is all under warranty.  I hope I'm luckier with this one.   Part of me wants to just scrap this one and upgrade, but they don't have a buyback program.   I wouldn't either if my product's reliability was this shoddy.
