(Bass) Guitar Hero

posted Wednesday, 12 March 2008
Our Detroit recording session on March 1/March 2 went amazingly well.  We got 7 songs done, and I will eventually go back to work on 2-4 more.

I gotta say, studio work is HARD!  The odds of everyone playing an entire song mistake-free during the first run-through are about .001 percent.  I was under a lot of pressure to get all my parts (bass guitar, backing vocals) done, since I don't live in the Midwest -- and I succeeded.  It was odd to hear myself on record.  Believe it or not, I didn't sound nearly as bad as I was afraid I would.  Actually, I sounded pretty decent.   One the drums were laid for any track, the rest of us could work around it or edit sections as necessary.  I'm pretty particular, so I 'punched in' several times to fix even single notes that I didn't like.

I also have to say that it's so cringe-inducing to listen to yourself in the studio the first time...and especially nerve-wracking the first time your bandmates say, "isolate the drums and bass."  Yikes.  But I was fine.   At the end of the marathon Saturday session (12 a.m. to 10:45 p.m.), I even got to sing backing vocals on 3 tracks -- more will probably come later, including the possibility of some lead vocal work in one or two songs.

It turns out my friend, who is also the creative force behind the band, is going to try promoting this thing as much as he can.  We're talking YouTube clips, Mp3s on the Net, shopping it to indie labels -- the whole nine.  There may even be some performance dates and a CD release party in our future.  Heady stuff indeed.

Will we be rock stars?  Since this album is a 90s-rock throwback, I highly doubt it.  But I suppose only time will tell.
