Yes, I am joining the kickball craze that is sweeping the nation. DC has the biggest kickball scene in the country, and I figured it was a good way to meet some new random people and get a bit more exercise in. After every game, there's a happy hour - and most kickball leagues are more focused on the socializing than on the competition. I'm doing
DC Kickball, as opposed to the bigger and more corporate
WAKA. I'll be playing either Wednesday or Thursday nights on the National Mall. It's grass, you can throw people out by hitting them with the rubber ball, and each team has about 26 people. You have to field a minimum of 8 to play, the max at one time is 11, and each game is 5 innings. That's basically all I know for now.
Full disclosure: I'm not entirely sober right now, because I went to a pre-season happy hour. Since I signed up by myself, I don't have a team, so I needed to go and find one. On top of that, it turns out the league is really female-heavy this year...so every team with openings needs guys. Too many women? When has that ever been a problem in any aspect of my life? Our happy hour bar looks to be 18th Amendment in Eastern Market SE, the same bar our division was at tonight.
I felt so wanted! People were talking to me as soon as I walked into the bar. Every team was looking for guys. I think I'm going to do a Wednesday night thing, though. Even though Wednesday hangovers kinda suck, I have some experience with them from my time in NYC. Plus, do I really want to give up my Thursdays? That's a prime night for vacations, other happy hours, shows, etc. But I gotta say, the people who recruited me for Thursdays (including the team of the head/organizer of the division) were pretty damn cool. Regardless, though, the chances of me moving from Wednesday are slim.
