Last weekend, not only was there a slew of Halloween parties to attend - there was also a visit by Eva and Doug.
Eva is one of my closest friends. She and I met during our participation in the New England Literature Program (NELP), which probably remains the single most influential activity I have ever chosen to pursue in my life (holy crap - there is
a Wikipedia entry for NELP!). For some reason, I haven't yet written a comprehensive entry on NELP or how it affected me. One of these days.
I also met Ed during NELP, and the three of us remain close friends. Ed and I were ushers in Eva's wedding, and I stood up at Ed's wedding and spent a good hunk off time with Eva. Eva is in residency in Detroit, and -- following adorably in her mother's footsteps -- is going to be a psychiatrist. I mock her incessantly about this and many other things. This is one of the reasons why when she calls, I assume an Austin Powers accent and answer "Hello, Doctor Eva."
The weekend before Halloween, Ed came down from Jersey because Eva and her husband Doug were coming to DC to visit both me and Doug's brother. They stayed at my family home Friday night, after meeting Ed and I in Baltimore for dinner. It ws really good seeing them again. Because I know that Eva and Doug can be derelict when it comes to obtaining music, I made sure they left with scores of new albums to take back to Michigan with them.
After they left me Saturday evening, I went to Kate and
Jared's Halloween party. Kate is another college friend, but unlike Eva and Ed, she actually lives in DC with her husband Jared. They are quite artsy - in fact, Jared (who has a
website that I surreptitiously added to my Friends Online section several weeks ago) is an artist and set designer when not at his day job, while Kate does theatre management work. As you can imagine, they love Hallween - and they throw a huge Halloween party every year. Last year, their costume party was their wedding.
I invited several friends, and showed up with my friend Laura. She and I reconnected at our 10-year high school reunion; technically, I've known her since the first grade. She came dressed as a southern belle, and I was dressed as a cop. The first 2 pics are shots from a party last summer; the third is from the party:

So it was fun times. I actually went to three Halloween parties over a week period. No more cop costume for me! I think it's officially retired.
