Escape To New York

posted Sunday, 18 November 2007
I just got back from an alternately relaxing and rushed weekend in New York City, the city in which I attended grad school.  Joe had FedExed me the keys to his apartment earlier in the week, and I had his place to myself for a chunk of the time I was there.

My closest friends still live in the New York area.  I got to see Daina, Andrew and their baby boy Ethan (and took note of how much more adorable he is in person) - they are in Jersey.  I also spent a lot of time with Dave for the first time in months, partly because he had been preparing for a marathon he completed a couple of weeks ago, and met his girlfriend for the first time.  Ashley actually came back in town specifically to see me, and I was really happy to see her - we seem to constantly miss each other when I visit the city.   But not this time - I got to see both her and Kristine.

I arrived Thursday night to find that Joe was still around, so we had dinner at a Momofuku - run restaurant on the east side.  During the day on Friday, I went shopping downtown and hand lunch with Dave at a fantastically cheap Italian place.  For dinner, I went to sushi with Daina/Andrew.  Saturday was barbecue day; Dave and I had lunch at Hill Country (I strongly recommend the place if you are in NYC).  Saturday night I had dinner with Dave, Laurie and Diddy at Saigon Grill.  Later that night, we went out to B Bar and an irish pub next door, where I got semi-dragged into a bachelorette party.  Sunday we had burgers at Stand near NYU, and I dropped into a couple of comic book stores before taking the train home.  The trip ended up being a great mix of alone/chill time and catching up with old friends.
