Fast Food Update

posted Wednesday, 28 June 2006
Since I reviewed Fast Food Nation, some of you might be wondering: what's your status on eating ground beef?

That's an excellent question.  Since I read Fast Food Nation, I have not eaten any fast food or chain restaurant ground beef.  Of course, there is an exception: Five Guys.  I have eaten at the small, growing kinda-like-In-N'-Out-Burger chain twice since I put up my review almost 3 months ago.

Otherwise, I always choose the chicken or the pork at fast food places.  It isn't an issue of morals - it's an issue of fear.  Some of you could justifiably point out that there is as much horrible food processing used to make chicken and pork.  You could also point out that both animals are fed cow parts.  That's all true, but there are far more details concerning beef production listed in that book than about chicken and sausage (sausage is just sketchy in general anyways).  Because doing the chicken is so automated, there is less human contact, less human injury, and less chance for humans to get their dirty, shit-covered hands on the meat.  The thought of that just grosses me out.

At least, that's my rationale.

Oh, and for those of you looking for fast food that isn't as scary: West-Coasters can feel free to eat an In-N Out Burger, which uses free-range cattle for their prodigious beef needs.  It's yet another reason to eat there, as if I needed more.     I'm still trying to find out what supplier Five Guys gets their meat from.
