Finally, iPod Resolution

posted Monday, 4 June 2007
My iPod finally returned to the land of the operable on Friday night, after a lot of phone support and work.  I called the Pentagon City Apple Store back when I came home from work; they guided me through several steps that didn't address the issue.  In the meantime, I was able to replicate the issue -- and I noticed an error message that I hadn't had time to write down the first time (it would disappear within seconds after appearing as a pop-up bublle in the taskbar).  Now, it appeared to me that one of the artwork files was corrupted or just plain not able to be downloaded, and that the attempt to place this file on my iPod was causing the problem.

The woman who helped me was incredibly condescending.  She mentioned, more than once, that the steps to solve these problems online were very easy to follow -- and asked me if I'd tried updating the .dll files and some other crap.  Meanwhile, she was completely doing everything by reading straight from the support webpages...it's not like she was some kind of "Genius", even though she was supposed to be.  Hell, give me a list of errors and webpages to find them, combine that with a bit of training, and I could easily learn her job.  Besides, there comes a point where you just don't believe the online information will help.  Given my awful history with iPods, I don't think my skepticism was at all unwarranted.

Bitterness aside, in the end we managed to restore my iPod to the factory settings.  Once this got done (it took several minutes), she old me to copy my songs back onto my iPod a few at a time so I could figure out which files to delete from my library.  As you can imagine, this took a long time -- 2 1/2 hours, to be exact.  This was the main reason I showed up so late to the College Park party on Friday.

In any case, it's finally done.  My iPod finally works again, and I don't feel like taking a power drill to my temple during my commute or while completing administrative tasks at work.  This whole episode has reminded me of how frightening my iPod dependency is.  At some point, I probably should just upgrade to a newer model.
