Kickball, Week...6? Yeah.

posted Friday, 8 June 2007

This past Wednesday, my teammates wished me a happy birthday.  One of our co-captains had us huddle up and say "This is for [jcabana]."  That was nice.  And we actually ended up playing very well.

In the first inning, we jumped out to a 2-0 lead.  It would probably have been more, had our co-captain not made The Single Dumbest Play I've Seen All Season.  Actually, I'll let the humiliating tidbit from this week's newsletter tell the story (since our game garnered "Game Of The Week" honors):

"FUNNY PLAY OF THE WEEK AKA "always count your outs" of the week. In the midst of the Freqs’ big early rally Wednesday night, co-cap JONATHAN dashed for third base while an out was made elsewhere on the field. Jonathan started to make his way to the sideline. The problem? There were only two outs. AA-Team whipped the ball back to the pitcher who made the tag for the easiest out anyone had all season, much less this week."

WTF?  Seriously, WTF?!?!  I literally had my jaw dropped for an entire half-inning afterwards.  This dude has been playing kickball for at least 2 years, possibly 5 years.  He's one of the captains.  How do you make a mistake like that??  We have people on our team that can't catch fly balls, can't field, can't really run fast at all and haven't played kickball since they were in 6th grade.  I can barely throw the damn ball.  Yet none of us would have made a mistake like that.  It's ludicrous.  It's unfathomable.  It's stupefying.  I'm running out of adjectives.

And that mistake probably cost us our first real win.

Anyway, AA-Team came back and took the lead on a couple of errors, and was up 4-2.  Then something totally unexpected happened: we came back to tie the game at 4 in the top of the 4th inning.  Both teams went scoreless in the 5th, so the game ended in a 4-4 tie.  This was probably our best game of the season; most of our team showed up, and all of us were able to put mistakes behind us and play with energy.  One definitive thing you can say about The Freqs: our attendance is impeccable.

[A final note: Last week I went to the Thursday happy hour even though all Wednesday teams had a bye week.  I ran into the head of the division, and he said "Wow!  You are in full uniform [my kickball team t-shirt] and everything!"  I thought to myself, "Something tells me I just made the newsletter."  Sure enough, there I was the next day, in virtual print.]
