Old-School Weekend With New-School Twists

posted Monday, 9 April 2007

This weekend was a blast.  First, I discovered the magic of Wonderland Ballroom in Columbia Heights.  Every first Friday of the month, they host a hip-hop dance party on their second floor which was VERY well-attended.  Its isolation from other bars probably helps.  Apparently, it used to be a down-low gay bar for black men; it definitely is not that way anymore.  The crowd was very mixed (race and sex), and very friendly.

Saturday was Jared's birthday celebration.  Volleyball was cancelled (again), this time replaced by ice-skating.  As you might guess, I didn't go skating but I did meet up with them for lunch afterwards.  Then I caught a train to NYC for Dave's 30th birthday party.  That was a total blast; he held it at R Bar (Lower East Side, dance music of all kinds, stripper poles with platforms installed on either side of the back room as a suggestion to patrons).  I ran into just about everybody I got to know through Dave while living in New York for grad school.  It was so unexpectedly fantastic to reconnect with all those people - and to dance for the second straight night.  I haven't danced for two nights in a row in years.   At least it felt that way.

Good times all around.
