BODY:
Today is a day I dread for two reasons.

The first is that it is officially the beginning of my last semester of grad school (unless I get into the new ones I applied to). This is the longest vacation I've ever had as a student in the winter. In fact, it was so long that it seems odd to be back in school.

I braved the lines at the bookstore and ended up spending an absurd amount considering my classload...then I renewed my locker at the school athletic center, ordered new transcripts and bought a new swimsuit. It's amazing how fast the chlorine destroys swimwear when you swim 5 days a week.

EXTENDED BODY:
The other reason I feared this day was because it officially marks the first day of the football offseason - the longest offseason in the sports world. Being without my favorite sport until training camp begins in August is my own psychological gulag. I follow all sports, but U.S.A. football is my number one love. By the time teams begin meeting again, I am feaning like a heroin addict locked in an empty room for a week.

I thought about calling this day "Black Monday"; then I remembered that I refuse to associate the word 'black' with anything negative. Then I thought about calling it "White Monday" since the white man is the devil, but I thought that would be too racially antagonistic. I guess the name doesn't matter.

Don't give me that bullshit about the draft; the NFL Draft is nothing more than a cruel tease. Any way you slice it, this is one of the worst days to be a football fan.

The silver lining is that there will be one more <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/archive?columnist=easterbrook_gregg&root=page2">Tuesday Morning Quarterback</a>. Somehow I missed <a href="http://espn.go.com/page2/s/tmq/030121.html">last week's edition</a>, which is pretty funny unless you're an Eagles' fan. My favorite TMQ quote from last week:

<i>"Promoters depict the Spring Ho Festival as a family event. "I never thought something with the word 'ho' in it would be described as family-oriented," Kristy notes. But Kristy, Eminem is now being pitched as a mainstream act, and every other word he speaks is "ho." Probably soon Eminem will have a zany, laff-riot sitcom called "The Ho and Me."</i>

P.S.: Andrew B., the Giants' last playoff game was the worst way to watch your team lose...but the Eagles' NFC Championship game is a pretty clear second.

Yeah, I'd be less pissed about the Eagles if I thought an opportunity like this was going to come along next year. Gruden is just too good a coach to let a team play prevent the whole game and not let them pay for it.

Oh, don't get pissy just because Andy Reid and the Eagles honked their second straight NFC Championship try. In my opinion, my break was actually too long. I don't like being out of the mix for more than a couple weeks.

And those of us who go to work every day shed a tear for you for actually having to go back to school after being off for more than a month. Really, it must be quite tragic for you.
