The Source magazine, in its continued attempt to destroy Eminem's career, have discovered and published racist lyrics in which Eminem rips on black women, calling them "bitches" among other things. They were written back when he was about 15 years old. The Source expects us all to be shocked and outraged. Every black person should go out and burn all their Eminem CDs, if they were misguided enough to have any in the first place, right?

Wrong.

This is the classic example of a racial double-standard. Has anyone heard the Ice Cube song "Cave Bitch?" In case you didn't figure it out, 'cave bitch' is a derogatory term for white women. In that song, Ice Cube samples an old line of his, "White bitches have no butt, and no chest" over and over again. It's really funny; if someone were to take it seriously, it would be revolting and offensive.

Why is it that black men can call (black and) white women bitches, but white men can only call white women bitches?

I don't define myself according to any set political ideology. Thus, if you're going to give me the same bullshit argument that "blacks are allowed to say such things because they are not in a position of power," I'll say you're full of shit. If you give me the even more tired, more general argument that "blacks can't be racist because they are not the ones doing the discriminating in American society," I'll say you are even more full of shit.

Racism can come from anyone, at any time. Black people can even be racist against other black people. White people can even be racist against other white people. And all races, regardless of societal location, are capable of being racist. To argue otherwise is an ignorant (and even harmful) lie.

Eminem admitted to writing the lyrics, and said that he wrote them after breaking up with a black girl he dated. How different is this from Ice Cube calling all white women bitches? How is this different from any man calling any women bitches?

It's not any different. But some, like Source editor who are trying (and failing miserably) to ruin Eminem's career, attach the firebrand of race to stuff like this and use America's natural sensitivity to the issue to turn a complicated, nuanced issue into race-baiting hysteria.

Oh, and here's a mini-PSA for you while I'm at it: The Source sucks. Yes, it may be the only broad publication completely dedicated to hip-hop worth even glancing at. However, the mediocre rappers that publish The Source seem content to staple together shitty, "blackified" writing in an attempt to cater to the lowest common negro denominator, instead of simply putting out a hip-hop mag for people of all races to enjoy. I'm sure their marketing helps the magazine to sell well, but it doesn't make me want to read it.
