D-Day, B-Day, G-Day, etc.

posted Wednesday, 1 June 2005
This might just end up being my lamest birthday in several years.

My birthday is Monday. For those who don't get the joke, Monday is June 6, which is also the anniversary of the D-Day invasion at Normandy which began the process of liberating France from the Nazis. Get it? D-Day? G-Day? Ha ha, never heard that joke before.

Anyway, I have Tommy's wedding to go to on June 4 (Saturday) in western Maryland, about 100 miles from here. It should be pretty decent; after all, I'll get to see a bunch of people from my past that I haven't seen in years. The hotels out there are cheap, and it's not too far from home.

But that day also happens to be the Saturday before my birthday. That means the logical time to celebrate is effectively killed. That means the earliest that I could celebrate would be the following Saturday.

Not only that -- there are very few peope here who I would think to celebrate my birthday with. As mentioned before, D.C. is full of friends, or former friends, who have by and large moved on without me. The notable exceptions are the people that I currently hang out with.

Of course, there is an alternative: I can simply plan my own thing, invite everyone I know and see who decides to come. That's a definite option -- it empowers me, and says "fuck you" to all the hand-wringing I might end up doing instead. Or I could go away that weekend, and celebrate elsewhere. Whatever I do, I have to make sure it's a good time.
