In the past week, both Yahoo and Slate have covered the striking new ads for Dove that are cropping up on ad surfaces everywhere. The ads highlight normal-sized women in an attempt to get viewers attention in a unique way.
It's working. I personally had my own brisk walk through a subway tunnel halted abruptly when I first saw one of these ads. The women are...well, normal-looking. It was weird.
Cynics point out that all products like this play on women's insecurities, so using normal women to attempt to push a product that is suposed to make a woman look better is hypocritical. And Slate seems to theink the ads will eventually lose efficacy because Dove products will become stigmatized as 'the fat-chick brand.'
