Good weekend, horrible sports weekend.

Well, Michigan didn't win, though they did play respectably well at times.  They lost 42-39 on the road at Ohio State; a poor first half doomed them.  I knew this game was going to be tough, and I knew their defense had to play lights-out in order for them to win.  They didn't.  The defense gave up two long TD runs, and that was that.  I didn't cry, though.  The game was too close for me to be too upset.

That said, we are now 1-5 against Coach Tressel, and Troy Smith is only the second QB in OSU history to beat Michigan 3 times.  Ugh.

I'm still reeling from te loss of Michigan's Papa Bear, Bo Schembechler.  Another example of his impact: as athletic director, Bo oversaw a championship basketball program.  When the head basketball coach several years ago gave notice to take a job at Arizona State right before the NCAA Tournament, Bo did three things: he refused to accept the man's notice; he said "Michigan basketball will be coached by a Michigan man, not an Arizona State man"; and he replaced the departing-coach with assistant Steve Fischer.  Michigan went on to win the national championship over Seton Hall in the Finals.

With Bo around, I felt he was like Michigan's dad; he always had our back.  As long as he was around everything would eventually work itself out.  And now he's gone.

As for the Redskins, who I haven't posted about all season: this team sucks.  What's sad is that last year provided hope for bigger and better things.  But those hopes were dashed a few weeks ago against Tennessee.  The scary thing is, I think I know why...and my opinion (effectively elucidated by Jason LaCanfora in this blog) doesn't give me much hope for the future.

I think Dan Snyder has figured out how to make the Redskins the most valuable franchise in the NFL, but has little patience or interest in building a successful NFL franchise.   Sadly, Gibbs' legacy will be tarnished by this second run.   It's not all his fault, though - Gregg Williams' defense has become ineffective as players have given up on him, and Al Saunders' offense isn't suited to the current personnel.  Nobody is performing above expectations on this team this year.

Oh well...at least Redskins' second-year QB Jason Campbell looks like the real deal after one start.  Let's hope it lasts.
