This New York Times editorial highlights a case I read about a few months ago. It's about a vegan couple convicted of murder for starving their baby. Instead of formula, they fed the newborn fruit juice and soy milk.
Not only do those foods fail to provide adequate nourishment for babies, they underscore the following important fact:
If you are a vegan and you get pregnant, you'd better at least go vegetarian while you are carrying your future child. And you'd better make sure your children at least get dairy in their diet. As the article says,
"An adult who was well-nourished in utero and in infancy may choose to get by on a vegan diet, but babies are built from protein, calcium, cholesterol and fish oil. Children fed only plants will not get the precious things they need to live and grow."links: digg this del.icio.us technorati reddit
