This week in kickball, my team (The Freqs) won! And this one was for real, yo!
We had a crossover week, so we played on Thursday instead of Wednesday. Our captains weren't there, lifting the drama issues mentioned previously (surrounding one captain, anyway) and freeing up a lot of positive energy from my aggrieved teammates (more on that in a bit). It was a very cool, overcast evening - almost unseasonably so. We only had 11 players show, which is the maximum number you can have on the field - so we all got to play the same field positions the entire game (improving continuity and reducing confusion). Most of our dude players were there. Biggest of all, we didn't make any unforced errors.
All this added up to my team laying the smacketh down on our opponents, 7-1. In fantasy sports terms, you would say that our team "went off" this week. Almost everyone got on base at least once. As for me, I didn't have to do much on defense (center field -- basically free safety); almost no balls got kicked into our outfield. But I had my best offensive game of the season by far: I went 2 for 2 with a run scored (my first of the season) and an RBI or two.
My first kick was a near man-bunt to third, which in kickball automatically nets you a single. Two kickers later, I was crossing home plate from second base. My second time up, I had a runner on second - thus, I couldn't kick to third. So instead, I aimed for the gap between first and second base and FINALLY got an airborne kick to drop into the gap in shallow left field. I've been trying to do that all 'freqing' season. This second single drove in one or two runs - it was hard to keep track because we were doing so much scoring for once.
The team we played was decent, too - their had a .500 record with 3 real wins to their name, while we had a forfeit win and a tie to ours. They just had a couple of blown catches, and we had some well-placed kicks. Otherwise, it was a pretty clean game - we played our usually-good defense sans mistakes this time, and they were good on defense also. They were also fun to play against - they warned us ahead of the game that they talk smack...but apparently that only happens when they're winning. Aside from a 1-1 tie in the top of the second, that never happened.
Afterwards, almost the whole team went to the bar to celebrate. It's been a while since that happened, too.
So about the drama: turns out I was wrong in my previous post about my teammates' issues with our co-captain. He used to work with them, and they had decided to start a kicball team. They invited people in their office (including him) to join the team...then he took it upon himself to contact the head of the division and make himself the team's captain. Once that went down, they were stuck with him on their team and taking over as captain for 2 years. They all wanted to play together - just not with him. He usurped control of the team on his own. Apparently, next time the team plays, our captain's former co-workers will inform the division head (in advance) that he is not to be on the team at all.
Anyway, fun times.
