NYE? [edit]

posted Monday, 10 December 2007

I've been thinking about what I'm going to do on New Year's Eve, and I haven't figured it out yet.  There's a big hotel gala that looks appealing, and I already know one of my friends is going to it.  But I'm not sure that I want to go -- it's expensive, which discourages some of my other friends from joining in.  I'd ideally like to spend New Year's Eve with as many of my closest friends as possible.

[Here's the thing: $125 isn't that expensive when you think about it.  How much money does one normally spend on dinner and drinks in DC?  Let's say you spend $30 to $40 on dinner, and $40 to $50 on drinks.  That's $70 to $90 already.  Now imagine getting an all-night open bar, and a buffet dinner.  Now factor in the NYE reality that almost every bar and club will be hosting some special event and charging more than they normally would for admission.  Sudden;y, $125 doesn't sound that bad, does it?]

My friends Amy and Megan suggested that I have a party at my house.  While I'm sure that's entirely doable, I'm not sure that I want to.  Number one, hosting any big house party is a pain in the ass...and hosting one on that scale would be an exponentially bigger one.  Even if I wasn't going to do the heavy lifting, I'd still be primarily responsible for cleanup, control and making logistical space arrangements.  Also, it would end up competing with at least one other house party being thrown the same night by an acquaintance of mine.

So I'm leaning towards the hotel thing, but I haven't made up my mind.  Of course, this all assumes that I don't travel for New Year's.
