Now that I'm in the midst of
The Big Project, I've had the chance to look back on some of the things I said back in 2003.
Take this entry, for instance. I wrote it after attending the NYC segment of a worldwide protest against the current Iraq War. Oh, and that was almost exactly two years ago. Sadly, not much has changed -- not even my opinion (though I admit that I went through a period where I thought the USA was sitting on some classified proof of WMDs in Iraq).
In the present, we know now that Iraq does not (and did not, according to a recently revised CIA report) have WMD capability. Osama bin Laden is still at large. Afghanistan, despite elections, continues to be unstable.
About the only fundamentally positive aspects of the situation that have changed are the ouster of Saddam Hussein and the recent Iraq elections. There's also been a negative development: militants and terrorists are flocking to Iraq and killing both U.S. troops and innocent civilians. I know it's only been two years, but this makes me sad. There's a very long way to go, and having the military stretched over two very hostile regions isn't helping. Too bad there's really very little choice anymore but to continue.
