I think my computer is back up to speed.  The tech is going to fix my adapter for 250 rand ($35).  In the meantime, he is letting me use his adapter.  I am going to have to do some resetting of factory settings, as a bunch of stuff got changed with the fix.  Also, my computer did spontaneously turn off a couple of times, so I'm not convinced that I'm out of the woods.  Mental note: I need a new cpu as soon as possible when I get back to the States...only after I get a place to live and (perhaps) a car, of course.
