So I finally sent out the opening e-mail salvo, putting everyone on notice that I'm planning my 10-year high school reunion. You did know that I was senior class president, didn't you? Naturally, Tom Kim went for SGA president because he's a wuss who couldn't handle the responsibility. I kid, I kid. I kid Mr. 1600. The funny thing is, Daina (who wasn't even a class officer at her high school) is also helping to plan her own. You just know it's going to be very, very organized. Not that mine won't be.
Anyway, it's a very strange time in my life to be planning this type of event. I don't have a real job yet, and I've been living all over the country and the world for the past 10 years. Usually, you think of reunions as a chance to find out what crazy life stage everyone is in. Thoguh I've been through a lot, nothing big is actually going on with me right now. Had I not had yet another life-changing experience living in South Africa, my overdeveloped sense of pride might have been wounded by my current straights. Thankfully, I'm more grounded that that now. I have accepted where I'm at, and I'm happy with what I've accomplished so far -- even if it doesn't look all materialistically pimped-out on paper.
What's cool about this is that we have a website set up for this purpose. Over the years, a decent number of people (70-odd out of 300) have updated their contact information, so I used my status as an organizer to send my message to the whole list. As a consequence, quite a few people have sent me personal messages -- some of whom I haven't seen or spoken to in 5-10 years. I've heard from Julie, Heather and Jessie to name a few, and hopefully I'll be hearing from more. As much as I've tried to distance myself from D.C. and from high school over the past decade, it's still great to hear from my former classmates (and my former constituents! Ha ha).
Now the real work begins...
