Cindy's Wedding (number 3 of 5 this year) - updated

posted Monday, 18 July 2005

To make a very long story short, something happened which I really couldn't imagine -- especially after driving 10 hours to Michigan and staying two nights in an Ann Arbor hotel:

We missed the ceremony.

But it wasn't my fault, and we still had a good time.  I'll add to this entry later.

UPDATE: I took a train up to Philly Thursday night, and then another to South Jersey.  Ed picked me up at the train station, and he, Regina and I drove out to Ann Arbor, Michigan on Friday.  We got there Friday night, went to Cindy's house briefly to see her and meet some guests, then went back to the hotel and crashed hardcore.

Saturday was a fun Ann Arbor day.  Ed, Regina and I did our customary shopping for cheap Michigan gear while we reminisced over college days gone by.  Regina got some pink yoga pants, I got a badass Dri-Fit visor (along with a copy of the new Harry Potter book) and Ed got a shirt.  We ate at the Maize-and-Blue Deli, and I took pictures of my old house at 1329 1/2 South University.

Did I mention it was raining?  This is a critical element of the story.  There was a flash flood watch because it was raining heavily for at least the second straight day.  Cindy's invite said that the wedding ceremony was outside at their house; however, in case of rain, the ceremony would be moved to the hotel where the reception was being held.  Both would be at 5:30.  Said hotel was right across the street from our hotel.

We called the hotel at 4:30.  They said the ceremony and reception would both be held there.   When we arrived, nobody was there.  Very odd, considering it had been raining all day, right?  We asked the front desk again.  Same lod story.  We asked the help.  They said the cermony wasn't going to be there.  We ran into the DJ and he said the ceremony was still at the house.  We ran into another confused group of guests for the wedding.  They were just as nonplussed as we were.

So we rushed back to the hotel, got in the car, and made the 20-minute drive to Cindy and Aric's place.  The ceremony was over, and they were taking pictures.  Dejected, we went back to the hotel for the ceremony -- but not before Ed managed to streak his new suit with mud down the leg.

Fortunately, we were significantly earlier to the reception than the wedding party.  We immediately started drinking away our sorrows, and managed to have a good time.  Cindy and Aric thought it was funny.  Even though it was the smallest wedding I've yet been to, she didn't notice our absence.

After the wedding, some of us went to the Necto for some post-wedding dancing.  It was hot and sweaty in the ssuit, and the club (along with the whole town) was shockingly packed considering we were in the heart of summer.  Regina's entry tells a slightly different, and in some ways more detailed, version of this story.

Anyway, we made the drive back on Sunday and crashed out, tired.  When left south Jersey on Monday, I discovered that Molly (Ed and Regina's wheaten terrier) actually likes me to the point that she whines when I leave the apartment.  I knew she was affectionate with people in general, and always would lick me and jup up when I came to visit.  But I didn't know she liked me in particular that much -- apparently, she only reacts by whining when she really likes someone.

I also realized I had forgotten my phone charger, and also had forgotten to charge my phone.  So I had to leave it off, and turn it on very sparingly to check voicemail.  Monday, I found out that a new one would cost $27 while getting my old one mailed via 2nd day air would cost $21.  So I'l get the charger back tomorrow; in the meantime, my phone will remain off for the most part.

Fortunately, this is the last wedding until Noah and Maya tie the know in Spetember.  I don't know about you, but I'm a bit weddinged out.
