Katrina Bullshit

posted Tuesday, 27 September 2005

As you may have noticed, I've been a bit busy for posting lately.  But I've beeen sitting on a bunch of stuff that I'vve just got to get out of the way.

The biggest thing is Katrina.  There is an unbelievable amount of bullshit flying around regarding this tragic event.  First off all, it is everyone's fault who was in authority.  It was W's fault for cutting funding to shore up the levees in New Orleans.  It was also Bush's fault for putting a bunch of unproven hacks in office since 200, siphoning off FEMA's ability to do its job.  Don't believe me?  Just take a look: Brown's 'stand-up' reaction pretty much says it all.  Of course, he's getting grilled by congressmen who unanimously approved his appointment to this role a few years ago.  It's all fucked.

It was also the fault of the local government for trying to play politics instead of evacuating people, then two-facedly blaming the feds for not responding fast enough.  I wish they'd just cut it out.  It would have been nice for them to appropriate funds to protect themselves instead of shoveling money at luxury and casino development.  And look -- they're at it again!

This only applies to Louisiana, of course -- Slabama and Mississippi have all but ceased to exist in the national consciousness.

Yo can't leave out the media and law enforcement, of course.  They managed to combine forces to completely demonize the mostly-poor, mostly-black residents of New Orleans.  They aren't people, they are rabid dogs!  Sadly, the people themselves also colluded with their efforts thanks to the lure of being quoted or somehow appearing on TV or in print.  Nevertheless, we are finally learning that many off the stories of lawlessness we heard were actually hyperbolic claptrap.

Obviously, law enforcement and rescue officials wanted to make themselves look better.  Much like English police did when they killed that poor South American for no good reason, it's easier to deflect criticism by telling everyone about bloodthristy mobs bent on randomly raping kids and shooting police officers than to admit to everyone that you didn't care enough.  About black people.

By the way, Kanye West was wrong.  Bush isn't racist.  He cares a lot about black people.  He just doesn't care about poor people.  There's a difference.  Like many not-so-compassionate GOP'ers, Bush has a great deal of compassion for certain groups which he chooses to advocatend protect.  And again, like many others, he feels that if everyone cares and donates to their personal charity of choice, then most people who need help will end up taken care of.  This is nonsense, of course, but it's the only explanation I can come up with for the GOP's continuous policies passed to benefit the rich in lieu of helping the poor.  Ironically, in this situation -- just like the tax-and-spend libs that most republicans despise -- it looks like the GOP is throwing money at the problem.

Why even have political parties anymore?
