This past weekend, I did something that was long overdue: I went out and bought a ton of clothes for work.
This is an area I've neglected for years, mainly because I've beeen able to get away with doing so. My first few jobs had very lax dress codes, particularly the dot-coms. Back then I didn't know how important one's appearance at work is to one's success.
Then I went to grad school, and of course I didn't need nice work clothes there. After that, I went to South Africa -- and since I was there for only a year, I scrounged by with what I had, adding some cheap clothes here and there just to get through my time. Coming home, I didn't need anything either -- and worse, when I came home, the dress shirts I bought that spring were all a half-size too small in the neck. So this was long overdue.
My total haul over the past 10 days will sound absurd, but I fortunately got everything steeply discounted. Even so, it was a lot: eight dress shirts, seven pairs of pants (three cold-weather cotton pants, and the rest normal), 12 pairs of dress socks, three short-sleeve work shirts, three sweaters, one pair of brown formal shoes, one pair of brown casual shoes.
Like I said, it sounds insane -- but I essentially updated/replaced my entire work wardrobe with stuff that is higher-quality than anything I've previously owned in this area (from places like Brooks Brothers, etc). And because everything came from an outlet/sale, I didn't spend anywhere near as much as you'd think.
I'm just glad it's over, since I'm very much a binge shopper. Once I decide I need to do something like this, Iit's hard for me to focus on anything else until it's done. Now I can re-focus entirely on the critical stuff for at least eight hours a day.
I also finally got back into the pool after a 10-day hiatus caused by weddings and after-work engagements. My back is thanking me profusely after bitching at me for five days. As usual, it was hard at first -- and then it felt awesome to get back in.
