Dave gave me this 7-song collection by underground hip-hop artist Aesop rock several months ago, but it took me a while to put it on my iPod. Now that I've the chance to listen to it (shuffled) for the past few months, I have to say it's everything he said it would be.
If you enjoy rap by underground artists such as Del the Funkee Homosapien, Hieroglyphics, and Kool Keith, you should definitely enjoy Fast Cars, Danger, Fire and Knives. This is just a seven-song EP, but it definitely provides an excellent sample of what Aesop Rock is capable of. Aesop's guttural, staccato delivery is immediately reminiscent of the above underground legends. Tracks like "Holy Smokes" provide funky and incisive crtiques of organized christianity, while songs like the title track are simply fun wordplay. The production and beats (by Blockhead) are extremely complex and catchy, getting better with each listen; I have to remind myself to look for more work from this guy.
And by this guy, I mean both Blockhead and Aesop Rock - this EP only makes me anxious to see how he holds up over the course of a full album.
