This commentary by Keith Olbermann shines a very harsh and correct light on everything wrong with what I now feel comfortable calling a travesty of a presidency. Will history bear Bush out to be correct? Not possible, since we already know he's wrong about Iraq, his cabinet is twisting to shirk their culpability in ignoring 9/11, and he has gone from a speech on the anniversary of 9/11 for Americans to "put aside their differences" to attending fundraisers in Nevada where he essentially accuses congressional Democrats of treason. Way to be a uniter, George.
And to anyone who says, "B-b-but clinton Didn't do anything about Osama either!": Just stop it. Yes, it's true. But we aren't talking about Clinton's presidency -- we're talking about this one. Clinton had his flaws - perhaps the biggest one was severely cutting not just the military's budget, but the intelligence budget as well in order to balance the budget. He also lied under oath about the blowjob instead of just admitting it, which was really, really stupid. At the same time, he had to fend of attacks from an opposing-party Congress determined to not only destroy the effectiveness of his presidency, but actually attempted to remove him from office on the basis of perjury about a legal act.
So what is W's excuse? Was too preoccupied with attackes from within to do the right thing? Was he defending genuine impeachment proceedings, which caused him to lose focus on the war on terrorists and led him to decide to destroy the Constitution -- the very fabirc of our country -- in ways that only Lincoln could have imagined? Is that why he decided to cripple us with a stupid was (in Iraq) instead of a just war (in Afghanistan)? Is that why he still hasn't done enough to support the intellignce community, and has robbed Americans of civil rights, even going so far as to advocate torture? Has any other president actually advocated torture, or accused his opponents of actually waiting for this country to be attacked again before taking action?
Anyway,
check out Olbermann's commentary. You can watch, listen, read or do all three at once.
And for the record, I think both parties are full of slimy, do-almost-nothing scoumbags who almost inevitably do what is right instead of what is easy. GWB is in some ways strangely out of place in Washington. He does what is hard, but still gets it wrong.
