The New Yorker recently published
a fantastic article that provides an in-depth analysis on the politics and ramifications of
24. It's long, but well worth the read. Apparently, one of the creators is a right-wingnut who very much injects his beliefs into the show. At the same time, the other co-creator/writers aren't like that at all.
As of Episode 4 of this season, 24 has been returned to "former favorite show" status. This season also continues the trend of me not liking the even years of the show. I think it's obvious that after 6 years, the creative and writing team has simply run out of ideas. It's also unfortunate that they have turned even harder towards cheap plot twists, chase scenes, eye-popping violence and formulaic one-upmanship to retain their viewer base.
My main criticism of 24 was that too often relied on style over substance. This has been more true this season than any other I've seen. Even worse, the acting quality seems to have reached an all-time low; Palmer the Younger is a weak performer, and all the extraneous characters have thus far failed to capture my interest. Everything seems to be a new twist designed to top what ha come before, and all only serve to make the show even more ridiculous and over-the-top than it already was.
It has gotten to the point that I don't even care anymore. Situations that are supposed to evoke tension and drama now make me laugh; these characters have been through so much that I can't take them seriously even when I try to suspend disbelief. In an unthinkable turn of events, I actually find the show bores me now. I still watch, but my engagement level is at an all-time low. We're talking lower than Season 2 low. I'll keep watching and hoping things will turn like they did last season, but I'm not holding my breath.
