Kickball Season 2, Week 4 [Fall 2007]: Strike Last - Strike Soft - Mercy.

posted Friday, 14 September 2007
This week, we were missing some of our regular players, including most of the Marines...and we ran headlong into the buzzsaw 2-1 team called Kiss Of The Badger.   And they just killed us.

I mean, it wasn't even close.  We didn't score in the first inning, and got called on a bullshit triple-play that shouldn't have been called; they had a great pitcher and solid fielders; we were complacent from all the big winning; we were missing or regular catcher, and two other Marines; and every team is gunning or us after our strong start.  Plus, we're the bad guys.

We made about 9 uncharacteristic, unforced errors - probably stemming from the fact that we don't all play the field every inning anymore (due to the increased size of our team).   I forgot my cleats in my first inning in the field, and dropped a very high fly ball with a runner on base.  Nobody scored on that play; they would score often throughout the game, however.

And our offense completely disappeared.  I was very disappointed with the poise, or lack thereof, of some of my teammates.  One of them got so frustrated in the second inning that he tried to hit a runner (a girl, no less) with the ball rather than getting the force out at second.  This resulted in an overthrow, and ultimately allowed at least 3 more runs.  It was the first time all season that we didn't have a lead, we had a couple of calls go against us, and people were blowing their stacks already?  Ridiculous.  Even more bizarre, it was getting dark by the second inning and both teams were already having trouble seeing the ball.

We didn't score until I scored in the bottom of the 5th and final inning in order to deny them the shutout.  I had to slide into first AND into third to do it.  I threw caution to the wind: what did we have to lose?  I changed my sliding style to avoid injury, sliding on my butt instead of just slamming into the ground.  But when I got to third, I slid...and as my butt crossed third base, the fielder trying to get me out pegged me in the head.   I was woozy for a moment, but it was totally accidental.   They weren't trying to peg me in the head...but they did.  Plus, on that slide I got a light-but-bleeding bruise on my right shin -- so much for finally evading injury this game.

Anyway, we got kicked in the face.  The final score: The Kiss Of The Badger 8, Cobra Kai 1 (corrected from before -- the blowout wasn't really so bad).  But it was bad enough - our worst loss (or second-worst loss) ever since I started playing.  I found out after the game that the new girls on our team are not fond of our Marine and/or more-intense teammates.  Have we become like the jerk team from last season?   That's a scary thought.  Oh well...better to lose now than lose later, but I really don't want our team to become That Team.
