I've always thought that the public marketing portrayal of Whole Foods was a bit too good to be true (while the prices leave a lot to be desired). Well, here's a rant that

a discussion thread supporting my misgivings with conjecture and sheer abrasiveness:
"Ah, it's a Whole Foods market... that explains it. A grocery store run by a bunch of aging hippies selling cherokee hair tampons is likely to fire you for "invading the bubble" of someone trying to rob them."
"Don't kid yourself - Whole Foods is a bunch of opportunistic criminals trying to make a quick buck by promoting a socially responsible attitude while selling overpriced unethically produced crap. I believe in 2006 they had sales of about $4.5B and had something like $1.7B in profit. Do some research on the "small farmers" they support - turns out they're pretty much the same massive farm corporations that are selling lettuce to every other super market.
Of course, while they do this, their CEO spends his time anonymously pushing their stock and badmouthing his competitors companies in yahoo chat rooms in an attempt to get the stock price up so he can afford more hookers and blow.
I would rather buy gas from Exxon than food from WF."
But don't believe me, or him.
This article is a lot more damning than anything OP has ever said about Whole Foods. It's amazing how many otherwise-liberal, environmentally-conscious people have bought into the Whole Foods lie. Very little about the company's food sourcing or distribution is good for the environment, yet their customer base is made up mainly of people who place the environment as a number one political concern. Fascinating.
